The Best Pickle I Ever Had…

was at Tony Packo’s.  Those of you from Toledo, OH know exactly what I mean.  The famous Hungarian sauage joint (famous to most for their sausage rather than their pickles) has been around for a long time, and even claims to have been one of Jamie Farr’s favs (you know him as Klinger from M.A.S.H.).

Though I live outside of Philadelphia, I usually get to Toledo at least once a year.  And thankfully, my mother-in law is gracious enough to send me Tony Packo’s if I whine about it enough.  I was so enamoured with what I call the Rolls-Royce of pickle jammers, that I was sure I could approximate the receipe and can my own version of Packo’s pickles from the bumper crop of cucumbers I expected this summer. Needless to say, my cucumbers were a major disappointment, and I was led to fall back once again on the Hungarian pickle purveyor.

But hark! there is light to this story.  I found the most amazing use for all those discarded pickle jars at Design*Sponge » Blog Archive » made with love: found terrariums– an expression of bounty all its own.

I found a new use, for an old idea.  How do you like those pickles?

A Perfect New Year’s Cocktail

You know that lavender plant you impulsively bought from Trader Joe’s,

I have an idea-

Grab a chilled Martini glass, cocktail shaker, ice, 2 ounces of vodka, 1/2 once freshly squeezed Meyer lemon juice, 1 ounce Lavender simple syrup and 1 fresh English Lavender sprig (garnish)

Combine all ingredients in the shaker, and vigorously shake.  Decant into a martini glass, optionally rimmed with sugar. Garnish with a sprig of lavender and enjoy.
